I got together tonight with some old classmates from my german class at the vhs. two of them are going back to australia, and one of them was visiting from the uk, so it seemed like a good opportunity to catch up.

Yesterday was Tag der Deutschen Einheit (German Unity Day). It also marked my third year in Munich. Niko and I usually do something Bavarian to celebrate. The first year we drove to Kochel am See and on the way home we happened upon an awesome restaurant that quickly became my favorite place for Bavarian food. We went back there yesterday with Sara and Christian.
The weather lately has been great. Cool and breezy with clear skies. The sun was setting on the drive down so I took a few shots from the car.

we all shared a pizza that was half a meter in diameter.

we went to visit niko’s mom this weekend. niko comes from a region in bavaria called Berchtesgadener which is really beautiful. lots of green fields, mountains and lakes. we had lunch on saturday at a place called Schmuggler which has really nice salads. on the drive back, we stopped at Chiemsee for a few minutes.

I know I’ve constantly griped about your warm weather and your unrelenting sun year after year. I know I’ve said mean things about you and tried my best to ignore you while waiting for Autumn to show up. And I know I’ve been overall, unappreciative of your awesomeness up until now, so here’s a post for you. Thanks for your shady beer gardens, swims at the lake, amusement park rides, blue skies, flowers on the balcony, fresh fruits and vegetables and for the refreshment of cold drinks that sometimes feature ice cream.
Hopefully you are still around for Oktoberfest.

The weather this past Sunday was great. It was sunny and clear, with a nice cool wind. Sort of like a sneak preview of coming attractions. Fall is my favorite season, so I’m excitedly looking forward to it. Saturday was one of those lovely rainy days perfect for reading the paper and baking. I made Banana bread with blueberries.
Just some random photos from the weekend.

Whenever I call my sister, I always pump her for details on what she had for dinner. If it’s fish I want to know: What kind of fish? Grilled? With what on the side? Who made it? I need to reconstruct her meal in my mind so I can internally drool at the tastiness that I’m missing out on.
I really like German food and we eat a lot of meals centered around bread, but sometimes I just want rice and some Japanese flavors. I told Niko that before the summer is over and the beergardens close, I really want to eat steckerlfish with a bowl of rice and some grated daikon and shoyu. Especially if it’s mackerel.
I had read a food blog where someone made jaga-imo miso-ni, which is basically a Japanese recipe for potatoes braised in miso, and I started craving miso. Unfortunately, the last of the miso had to be thrown out a few weeks ago when our fridge broke and I hadn’t gotten around to buying a new pack. It’s on the top of my to do list for tomorrow.
So for dinner tonight, he had his thing and I had warm soba with some gyoza. The soba sauce came in a bottle, the gyoza was frozen, but it was enough to cover the craving. Until I started looking at some food photos from Japan…
